A salary agreement for the public sector has for years been synonymous
with additional strengthening the anyway strong(er) employees. Tonight
Treasure and the Histadrut, in an historic move, broke conventions. Until
today, signed agreements guaranteed a percentile salary raise, and so that
earned a bigger salary benefited more, for each percent of their salary is
worth more. According to the agreement signed before dawn, employees
of the public sector will receive salary increases of seven and a half billion
NIS. Though half the raise will be percentile, the other half would be in a
fixed amount [of NIS], which will change according to the workplace.
Most of the unions celebrated the agreement, but some employees thought
that Nissenkorn didn’t go far enough for the weak employees, and
demonstrated in front of the Histadrut residence today. The agreement
ensures industrial silence for the next two years, then the ritual of a nightly
negotiations will surely repeat itself. The gaps in the public sector surely
won’t be cut down overnight, but a big step was taken today on the road to
a change in the lives of weaker employees.
