Item #3 (Advanced Level)
Good People
For almost sixty years Zecharia Yefet (has been) going town the stone
stairs he built to his pen every morning. He’s ninety seven years old, the
last farmer in Bet Zait. About two weeks ago his herd of sheep was stolen,
seventy sheep he took care of as if they were his children. He was one of
the key figures in the Aliyah of Yemen’s Jews to Israel, worked at the
Jewish National Fund for years, but decided that he wants to realize the
ultimate Zionist dream for him – and chose farming. A few days ago the
rumor of Zecharia’s herd being stolen spread in a WhatsApp group of
farmers from all over Israel. Good people agreed to donate from their
herds to surprise Zecharia and allow him to start a new herd. By now
they’ve already managed to collect donations of almost fifty sheep, a little
more than half the herd he had. Despite what he went through, the new
herd he’ll start will at least remind Zecharia that humans too, like his
sheep, can give altruistically.
