Using the Verb “to be” – ‫ ִל ְהיֹות‬in the Past Tense

As mentioned earlier, the verb ‫ = ִל ְהיֹות‬to be, is not used in Modern Hebrew in

the present tense. However it is used in the future and past tenses. This verb has 4
main usages:

1. Location

In this case the verb ‫ ִל ְהיֹות‬is conjugated according to the object / person.

Present Past ‫ָע ָבר‬ ‫הֶֹוה‬

I am home. I was home ‫ָה ִיי ִתי בבית‬ .‫אני בבית‬
yesterday. .‫אתמֹול‬
They are at the They were at the .‫ֵהם בּקֹולנֹוע‬
cinema. cinema. ‫ֵהם ָהיּו‬
She is at the office. She was at the office. .‫בּקֹולנֹוע‬ .‫היא במשרד‬
