Tel Aviv or New York?
For a moment one could be confused and think that New York is actually
Tel Aviv. Times Square was colored blue and white last night in honor of
Israel’s seventieth celebrations. And instead of ads for American brands,
the big screens of the shiniest square in the world told the Israeli story.
Under meticulous security and oversight by the New York Police over all
the participants, this show took over, for the first time in history, the most
famous square in the world and was the peak of the independence events
that already began in the morning. Tens of thousands of observers stood
along Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue in order to watch a giant parade in honor
of Israel, a tradition that takes place every year here, but was especially
festive this year. Within this crowd, it was hard to ignore activists of anti-
Israel movements, including the BDS movement, but it didn’t bother those
who came here. It may seem trivial to us, but for the Israelis and
Americans here, this was an unforgettable experience.
