Shalom Falafel
Shalom Vashdi and his wife are the father and mother of the Yemenite sect
in Nachlaot. Shalom was born in [the year of] 1906 in Yemen. In 1935
Shalom makes Aliyah with his family, and lives in Nachlaot.
Shalom and the family need a job, and they start selling falafel.
At first Shalom would walk with a big cart around the neighborhood and
yell, “Falafel! Falafel!”
A few years later he buys the store under the synagogue on Bezalel Street.
(He) stayed there until he died.
During the war in Jerusalem, there was no food in the city. Shalom had a
lot of chickpeas and flour, which he gave to the people in the neighborhood
for free.
You can still buy falafel at Shalom’s store today. All of Nachlaot’s
residents remember Shalom’s question, “With hot spice or without?”
