Where’s the ‘Watermelon for One NIS’?
The Israeli summer is usually full of watermelons, and (they) sell them
cheap, but this year something changed. The weather in winter wasn’t very
good, and a virus attacked the watermelons, which makes them more
expensive. If in past years we were able to buy a kilo of watermelon for
one NIS, this year we’ll pay at least five NIS for it. And it isn’t just the
watermelon, prices of all fruits went up this year – apples, grapes and
peaches, which went up the most – from nine NIS to sixteen. Even if the
farmer sells the fruits cheap, the markets are the ones who will raise the
price, and (those) who lose most by this are us, the buyers.
