Moving from Infinitive Form to Past Tense

‫ְל‬In Binyan Hitpa’el we omit the infinitive form prefix , while

maintaining the sound pattern of the infinitive form:

‫ְל ִה ְת ַק ֵדם ← ִה ְת ַק ֵדם‬

And that's it! This basic sound pattern already sounds like the name
of the Binyan – Hitpa'el:

HIT...A...E...

To this basic "kernel" we add the corresponding suffixes according to
the pronoun. As an example let’s use the verb:

to progress - ‫ְל ִה ְת ַק ֵדם‬
‫ְל ִה ְת ַק ֵדם ← ִה ְת ַק ֵדם‬

Pronoun  ‫ ּו‬ ‫ ה ֵהם‬ ‫ִהיא‬  ‫הּוא‬
Suffix
‫ּו‬+‫ה ִה ְת ַק ְדמ‬+‫ִה ְת ַק ְד ָמ‬ ‫ִה ְת ַק ֵדם‬
Suffix  ‫ִה ְת ַק ְד ָמה ִה ְת ַק ְדמּו‬ ‫ִה ְת ַק ֵדם‬

Note that the kernel for ‫ הּוא‬is different than the kernel for ‫ ִהיא‬and ‫ ֵהם‬.

For the second chart, we use a slightly different “kernel”:

Pronoun ‫ ֶתם‬ ‫ַא ֶתם‬ ‫נּו‬ ‫ֲא ַנ ְחנּו‬ ‫ ְת‬ ‫ַא ְת‬ ‫ ָת‬‫ַא ָתה‬ ‫ ִתי‬ ‫ֲא ִני‬
