The San Simon Monastery
The monastery was built in the middle of the 19th century. It is
named after Simeon - the first to ecknowledge Jesus’ messianity
and is mentioned in the New Testament. According to the
Christian tradition, this is the place of burial of that same Simeon.
Above the church’s entrance a Greek inscription is engraved,
which tells the story of the monastery’s construction. Over the
inscription (you) can see drawings of tools used by the church’s
builders.
The monastery was used both as a residence for pilgrims of the
Greek Orthodox sect and also as a place of shelter for those
afflicted by the polio [children’s paralysis] plague that broke out
in Israel in 1955.
Today a sole monk resides in the church, but every Sunday monks
from other places in Jerusalem join him for a prayer.
