                                   Foreign Object

When my sister Shira swallowed a ten-shekel coin, father and mother got
really frightened and went with her immediately to the hospital. I went with
them too. We waited in line at the emergency room, and I tried the whole
time to stop my [the] breath or to breath carefully only through the nostrils
in order not to be infected by the diseases of all the other people.

The coin, Shira took from my backpack, and I was worried about what
would happen. I thought that perhaps I am also a little guilty of what
happened to her. The doctor examined Shira and said that when you
swallow a foreign object (that is how you call what Shira did) you have to
do an x-ray (photo) in order to see that the foreign object is not blocking
the intestine. Shira cried because she thought the photo will hurt her, but
Father said that she has nothing to worry about and allowed her to press
the button of the elevator.

We waited again in line for the x-ray, and when our turn came up the nurse
said that only Shira and one of the parents is allowed to enter. Mother went
in with her, and Father and I went to the cafeteria. Father bought himself
coffee and for me a can of coke and we sat next to one of the white tables.
Father said that we will have to wait a little until they do Shira's x-ray and
until they develop the slides. Later we'll have to return to the doctor who is
in the emergency room.

Before we returned, father bought mother coffee too. We took the slides
and returned to the emergency room. Shira said the picture taking was fun
and that mother wore a funny long robe. The doctor put the slides onto a
lit wall and showed Shira and me all the disgusting things that she has in
her stomach, like her digestive system and her intestines, and then he
pointed at [on] a white circle and said that that is the coin. He said to mother
and father that even though it is a pretty big coin, they should wait until it
comes out "the natural way". Shira and I furrowed our eye brows, because
we did not understand what that means. The doctor noticed that, bent over
to us and said, "you should wait twenty-four hours and see if the coin comes
out with the poop." We both laughed a little because the doctor was an
adult and he said poop.
