Going to the Military
Just as the political system was starting to show some stability, Supreme
Court Justices issue a very dramatic verdict tonight. The Supreme Court
said that it’s time for equality, everyone in the country should serve, and
now the government has to stop the shady deals and just legislate a law
where everyone serves the country. Nine Justices analyzed Israeli society
and equality and service in the IDF values in depth, and all but Noam
Sohlberg stated that the bill is to be rescinded. Sohlberg warned of the very
dramatic consequences for the ultra-orthodox community as well as the
political system and the government, which leans on the ultra-orthodox
parties. “The Supreme Court came and decided that the bill is
unconstitutional, we can’t accept this, we’ll consult with Israel’s Greatest
(rabbis) and I hope we can work these two bills out and the government
won’t be dismantled.” Now the Knesset is required to formulate a new
arrangement for enlisting the ultra-orthodox within a year; it’s possible
that the violent demonstrations on the ultra-orthodox street will increase,
and what will definitely increase is the voices at the Knesset who will
demand to pass a bill to ban the Supreme Court from rescinding bills.
