                      The Soldiers’ Father

“At six AM, a phone call. I only heard, “your daughter passed away.” At
the funeral I took a vow and I uphold it, I’ve been upholding it for many
years. Instead of sinking into the bad stuff, I deal with things of giving.”
Out of the horrible pain started a life’s work, a work that’s been going on
for twenty five years. “The soldiers’ father”, they called him. Zvika Levi
made sure there won’t be a single ‘lone soldier’, who left his family
overseas and came to serve in the IDF, who’ll feel lonely here. Under the
Kibbutz Movement he got the soldiers adoptive families, escorted them,
with warmth, with love. Over the years, twenty thousand lone soldiers
came through his wide hands. Two years ago, surrounded by friends, he
celebrated still in the prime of life. Nine months ago, at the age of sixty
seven, he developed a muscle atrophy disease, lost movement and speech.
A month ago, he amazed everyone and was able to speak again. Today the
award committee at the Ministry of Education chose to give Zvika Levi the
Israel Prize for (his) special contribution to society and the country.
