                                       The Christians are Angry
This act of protest hasn’t been seen in the old city in centuries. As part of
the fight against the decision by the Jerusalem municipality, church leaders
in the city decided to close the gates of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre,
one of the most important churches in the Christian world, until further
notice. The decision was made following two decisions by the state that
are a violation of the status-quo for the Christian world: the demand by the
mayor of Jerusalem Nir Barket to retroactively impose municipal tax of
hundreds of millions of NIS on the churches’ properties, as well as a bill at
the Knesset that aims to expropriate areas that belong to the churches to
the state. These demands made the international community very angry.
The sum total the city is requiring from all the churches in the city exceeds
seven hundred million NIS. Church members are demanding to return to
negotiations, but the solution for this crisis is still far [from ending].
