Culture in the German Colony
With time (lit. with the years), the German Colony turned into a very
popular neighborhood due to its village-like charm and central
location.
One of the special places in the Colony is the “Lev Smadar” cinema.
The cinema is the oldest place in Jerusalem and it has existed for
already 80 years!
The building was established in 1928, and was used by the British
army. In 1950 Aryeh Chechik bought it and to this day his family
owns the cinema.
The cinema has always been a homey place, with Chechik as the head
of the family, a cashier, an usher and a projector, all at the same time!
In the fifties, there was an ongoing sale at the cinema: two movies for
one ticket – a western and a war movie, (resulting in the fact) that
people spent a lot of time at the Smadar cinema…
Today the cinema is known for its quality films projected in it and one
can watch a movie with a cup of coffee or beer in (their) hand.
