The Nationality Bill
Last night the Knesset passed the Nationality Bill in a second and third
call. The ending tones of the very long deliberation, more than eleven
hours, over the Nationality Bill were especially dissonant, both for the
opposition and the coalition, as at the time of the bill’s passing, around
three AM, members of The Joint List threw torn pieces of paper, the bill’s
draft, towards Prime Minister Netanyahu, whistled and made noise until
they were taken out of the hall. A big part of the Zionist Union members
walked out demonstratively as well, when Prime Minister Netanyahu went
up to make a speech. After him the departing head of the opposition
Herzog gave his last speech as a Knesset Member, and he too like the
entire opposition, strongly attacked the Likud and Netanyahu who mark an
important political achievement this morning, at the end of a legislative
marathon. Things Netanyahu said right after passing the bill, “This is a
founding moment in the history of Zionism and in the history of the state
of Israel. A hundred and twenty two years after Herzl made his vision
public, we fixed into law the founding principle of our being, Israel is the
national state of the Jewish people.”
