Give and Take
Yonatan, who moved to the Florentin neighborhood, needs some tools.
Instead of asking his wife’s father or asking with the neighbors, as of today
he can borrow (them) from the community center in the neighborhood.
The common denominator of the products up for borrowing is that they’re
expensive compared to their frequency of use, and of course, they take up
a lot of room at home. Tel Aviv municipality bought new products for the
project; the whole thing cost about fifty thousand NIS, small change for
the municipality from parking tickets. The project has many advantages: it
lowers costs for residents, clears space in apartments, makes a nice
community and is also great for the environment. But in the end, clearly, it
will all rise and fall on how the products are preserved. Each borrow costs
just ten NIS, a symbolic ‘seriousness fee’, and the borrower also leaves
details as a deposit in case of breakage or loss of the product. In this stage
the project is for Tel Aviv residents only, and if it succeeds in Florentin is
expected to spread to other neighborhoods.
