Torah Portion Ba'Midbar

Parashat Ba'Midbar opens with the verse:

"God spoke to Moshe in the Sinai Desert…" (1:1)

The Midrash comments on this verse: With three elements was the Torah given –
with fire, with water and in the desert… For just as these three elements are given
for free to everyone, so too Torah is given for free.
The Sages say that these three elements indicate how a person needs to act in his
life.

 The fire – symbolizes enthusiasm in the heart.
 The water – symbolizes clarity of thought.
 The desert – symbolizes modesty and contentment with a little bit.
