The Book of Numbers- ספר במדבר
Torah Portion Be'Haalotcha
A verse in the Torah portion Be'Haalotcha declares:
"And the mixed multitude that was in their midst craved a craving, and
the Children of Israel also sat and cried and said: Who will feed us
meat?" (11:4)
The commentators ask: Why did the Children of Israel request meat? After all,
they had many flocks and cattle when they left Egypt.
As it says:
"And a mixed multitude also went up with them, and flocks and cattle, very much
livestock." (Shemot 12:38)
Furthermore, it was possible to taste all tastes in the manna – including the taste
of meat. So what exactly was their problem?
R' Avraham Menachem of Prot says: The mixed multitude came to Moshe with
a provocative demand. In Egypt, they were used to eating many fish from the
Nile, and now they requested meat that would have the taste of fish!
And G-d fulfilled even this request and brought them quail, whose meat has the
taste of fish.
