                  David Yellin- Part 2

In 1938, during the Arab Uprising of 1936-1939, David Yellin's
fifth son was murdered. As a result of this murder and the
relations between the British Mandatory Government and the
Jewish settlement, David Yellin and his wife Ita wrote a letter to
the British High Commissioner. In the letter, David and Ita Yellin
wrote that they were returning the Letters of Honor they had
previously received from the British government, saying that the
government was not moral and even aided and abetted murderers.
He wrote, "I now consider this Letter of Honor as a Letter of
Dishonor and herewith return it to he who gave it to me 21 years
ago."
Yellin was very active in finding new Hebrew words and in the
rejuvenation of the Hebrew language. As opposed to Ben
Yehudah, who often turned to Arabic in order to find new Hebrew
words, Yellin believed in independent creation of new words such
as the Hebrew words for joke, compass, rare, engine of a train,
actor, and date. In addition, we use Yellin's words for
photographer and photograph instead of Ben Yehudah's
innovations: light painter and light painting.
