David and Eta
In his private life, as in his public life, David Yellin was a very
goal-oriented man. He was involved in education with all of his
soul. He sought a matrimonial match for some time but was
unable to find a suitable young woman. Finally, he met Eta Pines,
the daughter of Yechiel Michael Pines the great Zionist, one of
the founders of Religious Zionism.
David Yellin may have found his heart's desire but Eta found his
courting customs problematical. One time, David came to visit
her but sat some distance away from her and spent the evening
speaking only with her father. Eta became upset and told him that
he doesn't have to marry her if he doesn't want to…
Immediately after their engagement David went to study in
Beirut, a long desired dream of his. Once again, he didn't consider
the effect it would have on Eta and she became very upset yet
again. David wanted to placate her and planned to return to Israel
to celebrate Pesach with her.
To his great misfortune, on his way back a storm broke out.
David got off in Haifa and had to ride by donkey all the way to
Jerusalem. David couldn't get to Jerusalem in time for the Seder.
Only two days after the holiday did he appear at Eta's parents'
house.
Eta was very angry at his late arrival but he had a gift in his
hands, a Singer sewing machine which he had carried with him
all the way on the donkey. David and Eta made up, perhaps
because of the gift, and they were married as planned. David and
Eta Yellin became a leading couple in the field of education at the
beginning of the century.
