The German Colony
In 1868 the first Templer families came from Germany to Haifa.
The Templers chose to live in Haifa because it was close to the ocean, so it
was easy to get to it and go from it. They also thought that in Haifa there
were other good things like comfortable weather. During that time only four
thousand people lived in Haifa, in a neighborhood known today as “lower
Haifa”.
After the first group of Templers, more Templer families arrived in Haifa,
and in 1873, 250 people lived in the Colony, in 38 houses.
At first the Templers thought they could work in agriculture, but they quickly
realized that it is not for them.
The Templers worked with many tourists. They were the first to organize bus
lines from Haifa to Akko, Nazareth, Galilee and the Kinneret, Jaffa and
Jerusalem. Many tourists and pilgrims, who came from Europe by sea,
traveled on these buses. The Templers also built beautiful hotels like in
Europe – in Haifa, Nazareth and Tiberius.
Today there are many shops and cafés in the colony.
