Important Note on the English Component
For some teachers, inclusion of English might seem to be strange and even
“unacceptable”. However, Ulpan-Or’s research (corroborated by many
recent academic studies) reveals a different picture – it accelerates the
study pace and improves retention rate for students ten-years old and
above. (The situation is different for younger students).
The English component has three main functions in Ulpan-Or
methodology:
1. Serves as an effective and fast medium to convey written instructions
for the target language acquisition, as opposed to teaching Ivrit
Be'Ivrit.
Teachers in class must use Hebrew for their oral instructions.
2. * Accelerates effective acquisition and retention and retrieval of new
vocabulary.
3. Serves as a reverse basis to stimulate assimilation of correct target
language structure when translating from native language to target
language and frees the person from negative anxiety.
* Please see below an excerpt from a summary in a recent academic study conducted
in the University of Paris regarding the importance of use of the mother tongue in
learning a second language.
…To achieve better retrieval, one should focus on learning from the mother tongue to
foreign language and not vice versa;
Student gets the word in the mother tongue and tries to retrieve it, unlike identification
(foreign language to mother tongue)…
