Binyan Nif’al – Infinitive Form Track 1
Binyan Nif’al - Introduction
In Binyan ִנ ְפ ַעלwe have some distinct characteristics:
Verbs associated with this Binyan have the same sound pattern
nI.. A.. in the past tense as the sound pattern of the name of Binyan Nif’al
(nIf'Al) suggests.
Binyan Nif’al includes many very useful verbs such as:
ִנ ְס ַגר ִנ ְכ ַנס ִנְׁש ַאר ִנ ְפ ָתח
Was closed Was opened Remained Entered
nIs'gAr nIf'tAkh nIsh'Ar nIkh'nAs
Pay attention again: all of these verbs have the vowels for third person
in the past tense, which are the same vowels as in the name of the Binyan
nIf'Al and maintain the sound pattern: nI.. A..
The infinitive form usually begins with ְל ִהand has three syllables and
the sound is
*L'HI...A...E... - לה י ֵי
Example:
To enter - ְל ִה ָכ ֵנס
It is possible to write either ְל ִה ָכ ֵנסor ְל ִהי ָכ ֵנסand likewise with other
verbs in this group.
* Please note that for verbs that start with a guttural letter the sound
pattern is slightly different.
Instead of L'HI...A...E..., the sound pattern is
L'HE...A...E... as in the following verb:
To fall asleep - ְל ֵה ָר ֵדם
