The austerity created a situation wherein people had money but there was nothing to
buy with the money. Thus, a black market was born. In the black market, citizens
bought food illegally. David ben Gurion claimed in a speech that was broadcasted
over the radio, that the black market encouraged theft, challenged the basic
principles and values of the body politic, and especially endangered the
establishment of the free economy. In 1951, under pressure of public opinion, the
period of food and product rationing was ended.
Dov Yosef went on to become the Minister of Justice. A man of humor, he coined a
pun, in Hebrew of course. He said that he had gone from being Sar Hafilet
(Minister of cheap fish) to being Sar Din (literally, Minister of Law but also a play
on the word sardine).
