The story is told that when he passed by the guards in his compound he would offer
to replace them in guard duty so that they could go to the bathroom.
Ben Tzvi was the only President elected to three terms. At the beginning of his
third term he passed away. He was buried on Har Hamenuchot (literally Mount of
Rest) by his own request. He wanted to be buried as a man of the people and not in
a plot reserved for the greats of the nation. Prime Minister David ben Gurion said
of him then: "I never met a man of such accomplishment and greatness of spirit
alongside such modesty, unpretentiousness, and simplicity in his entire manner. He
personified love of Israel and the unity of the people of Israel as no other man was
able to in his time. The entire nation felt it; and I am not aware of any other man of
our generation who earned the love of the entire nation, of all its sects and tribes, as
did Yitzhak ben Tzvi."
Yitzhak ben Tzvi felt a deep connection to the Bible (Tnach) and led a weekly Bible
study group that still meets at the Ben Tzvi Institute.
