When the city approached Ussishkin and requested he pay his property tax he
responded: "When Ibn Shaprut (another great from the Golden Era of Spanish Jewry
after whom a street is named) and the others pay the tax I will pay it, too”.
Ussishkin suggested to set up on Mount Scopus a cemetery for the greats of the
nation and he made sure that Pinsker's remains were moved there. After Ussishkin's
death he was also buried there, but with the rise of the State, it was decided to
establish the national cemetery on Mount Herzl, not on Mount Scopus. Thus, the
man who immortalized himself while he was still alive, is left out of the burial
ground set aside for the greats of the people and the nation.
