Netanyahu at the Square
Nine AM, an enormous statue, almost five meters high, (made) of gold, in
the image of Benjamin Netanyahu, suddenly stands in the middle of Rabin
Square and immediately became an attraction. For months, artist Itay
Zalait, very quietly in his private studio, created the statue in the image of
the Prime Minister. His purpose was to test the boundaries of free speech
in Israel two thousand and sixteen. And it took (him) far, in his wildest
dreams Zalait couldn’t have imagined the turmoil and urges his statue will
incur. The municipality taped an eviction notice on the statue and decided
that if Zalait won’t clear it out by one PM, they will with the artist paying
the costs. As the minutes towards the time to remove the statue grew
closer, arguments surrounding it got more and more heated. The artist had
already gone to get a ladder to clear the statue out, but one of the protestors
couldn’t resist. The statue in the image of Netanyahu was knocked down
to the floor. At one PM Zalait cleared the enormous statue out and peace
slowly returned to the square. In summary of his artistic experiment we got
yet another example of the so very violent atmosphere in Israel today.
