Item #1 (Low-Intermediate Level)
Where’s the ‘Watermelon for One NIS’?
The watermelon may be the king of Israeli summer, but unlike in past
years, this year watermelon is (more) expensive than ever. Usually (they)
sell watermelon for one NIS per kilo, but this year (they) sell it for five
NIS. Why does this happen? Winter isn’t very good this year, and there’s
also a virus in many of the watermelons. But this isn’t just the watermelon,
all fruits are more expensive this year. And even if the farmers do sell the
fruits for cheap, the markets are the ones raising the price, and (those) who
pay for this the most are us – the buyers.
