The Banai Family
Yossi Banai was born in Jerusalem in 1932 and was a man of
memories. He said: “A man without memories is a poor man.”
The Banai family came to Israel in 1889 together with about 120
families, from Persia (Iran). The family’s traditional job was
construction, and from came the name “Banai” (builder).
Yossi’s grandfather, Eliyahu Yaakov, opened up a vegetable store, on
HaAgas Street.
Eliyahu has a sick son, Meir, and he wanted to find him a wife who
would take care of him. He married him off to his niece, Bechora.
Bechora’s real name was Malka but in Persian families, anyone who
was born first was called Bechor/a.
Meir and Bechora married and had eight chidlrem. One of the children
is Yossi, and he has four other siblings who are famous. Yossi and his
sinblings also had children, who later became famous artists in the
areas of Israeli television, cinema, theater, music and entertainment.
