The Book of Leviticus – חומש ויקרא
Torah Portion Metzora
The Torah portion of Metzora tells about leprosy that afflicts people. The leper
has to come to the priest in order to be purified, as is written:
"This shall be the law of the leper on the day of his purification; he
shall be brought to the priest." (14:2)
Our Sages said that the leprosy affected a person who spoke gossip.
They tell about Rabban Gamliel who asked his servant, Tabi, to bring him a
piece of good meat from the market.
The servant went and brought tongue from the market.
After a few days Rabban Gamliel asked him to bring him a piece of bad meat.
The servant went and again brought tongue from the market.
Rabban Gamliel said to him: How is it that you bring me tongue when I ask for
a piece of good meat and also when I ask for a piece of bad meat?
Tabi answered him: The tongue – from it comes good and bad!
When it is good – there is nothing better than it.
And when it is bad – there is nothing worse than it.
