A Special Girl
Every Friday the Zhu family gets into this trailer and starts a six hour
journey from (their) home in Newcastle to East London. Here, in the
mobile home, they spend every weekend together. This isn’t a trip exactly,
the family crowds and does all this for Leia. Only ten years old and
already one of the biggest talents in the violin world, and as such has a full
scholarship to attend the prestigious music school in London. At age three
and a half Leia held a violin for the first time, at age four she already
performed before two thousand people and at age five spearheaded a tour
in nine cities in Spain. Every Saturday morning she comes out of the
mobile home to school for two days full of music lessons. She combines
her studies here with a regular school in Newcastle and many concerts
around the world. This summer she’ll join sixty musicians and participate
in the prestigious Keshet Eilon master class in Kibbutz Eilon in Israel.
While Leia plays, her father has to refill the parking meter every two
hours, her mother takes care of her little brother, the entire family revolves
around the girl’s extraordinary talent. On Sunday evenings the family goes
back to the trailer and sets off for the journey home once more, to the place
where a home isn’t on wheels and where Leia is still a normal girl and not
just a once in a generation prodigy.
