A Tragedy at Sea
The tragedies over the weekend at sea, which ended with the death of
singer Amir Frisher Guttman and hi-tech company CEO Rami Fage, took
Keren Shahak from Giv’atayim one year back. It happened on an
undeclared beach, around Mikhmoret, she was drifted with her two kids in
a big wave into the depths of the sea. Since the beginning of the beach
season MDA personnel treated about one hundred individuals who
drowned, twelve of those ended in death. The majority of drownings
happened on undeclared beaches. The length of Israel’s coastline in a
hundred and ninety kilometers, fifty of which are closed for ports and
infrastructure. Out of the remaining hundred and forty, only seventeen
kilometers are declared beaches with lifeguard services. Baruch Harush
has been a lifeguard for thirty years and manages a lifeguard station in
Haifa. He knows the dangers of a retreating wave firsthand. In the past two
days there have been thousands of shares online of guidelines
accompanied with images (on) how to avoid the next disaster at sea. (You)
can prevent the tragedies at sea, (you) only have to adhere to safety
instructions and guidelines, and not go into the sea when there’s no
lifeguard.
