Women’s Day
Three months ago history was made at the Knesset. Knesset Member
Danny Atar resigned to be head of JNF and in his place entered Yael
Cohen Faran, who became the thirty second woman in the assembly, an
all-time record. A Naamat campaign in honor of Women’s Day tries not to
let us bask in this for even a minute. So yes, the percentage of women in
the Knesset is nearing the OECD average, but what’s going on in more
meaningful positions of influence? The number of women ministers in the
government is three of eighteen members, a total of sixteen percent. Only
one woman serves as a deputy minister and in only four cities does a
woman serve in the highest office, mayor, an especially pathetic rate.
Since the establishment of the country only seventeen women served as
ministers, out of two hundred and forty two members of government. A
mere seven percent. Meanwhile at the Knesset there’s already a request to
adjust working hours for mothers. It’s still unclear whether the Knesset
will grant the request, but there’s no doubt that a lot of work still awaits
male and female Knesset Members when it comes to promoting women,
among other things in fighting violence towards women and reducing pay
differences that are still very big (both) in the private and the public
sectors.
