During the temple period, the people in Israel would go on a pilgrimage
to Jerusalem on Shavuot and bring as a gift to the priests their first fruits.
First fruits – bikkurim –from the word ‘bekhor’, first born, are the first
fruits, wheat and vegetables that grew in the fields.
In today’s Israel, the custom is kept until this day in the kibbutzim, where
they hold a ceremony of bringing bikkurim every year on the eve of
Shavuot.
