High Intermediate Level – Graffiti in Tel Aviv
The Kufsonim
Who are the Kufsonim? These are
the figures drawn by Adi Sened. He
began painting them while he was a
student at Bezalel, and since then
you can find them everywhere in
Tel Aviv. Why are they called
Kufsonim? Because they are square,
like a box (KUFSA).
Some of the Kufsonim are tributes to familiar figures from history and
popular culture such as Moshe Dayan, Santa Claus and others. They
have everyday objects like a guitar, an apple or a key. In one of the
works there are Kufsonim in the form of Adam and Eve, but unlike the
Torah, here Adam gives Eve the apple and Eve has a knife - what do
you think she wants to do with it?
Typically, the Kufsonim are not alone, sometimes there are several
together, and sometimes they are with animals. Sometimes the
Kufsonim are located low (on the wall), and there is a reason. Sened put
them there so that children could meet them at eye level, because he
knows that children often see things that adults cannot see.
