                                                  Hava Nagila

More than bagel with lox, more than Seinfeld or Woody Allen, the song
Hava Nagila symbolizes modern Jewish folklore more than anything. This

song has many, many versions. It began its path in a Shtetl in the Ukraine

as a Hassidic melody, but the father of Hebrew musicology Abraham Zevi
Idelsohn turned it into the popular happy song. He wrote the lyrics at the

right place and time, immediately after the Balfour Declaration, which
helped the song become popular with Jews all over the world. So even

when the relationship between Israel and the Jews of the United States is

in crisis, when (they) hear Hava Nagila at a wedding or a Ber Mitzvah,
            everyone comes to dance.
