               Itamar Ben Avi – ‫ִאי ָת ָמר ֵבן ַא ִב"י‬

English translation

Itamar Ben Avi, the first born son of Eliezer Ben Yehuda was born in a
house across the street from the Ethiopian church. Itamar was a famous
journalist in Israel and spoke only Hebrew since the day he was born.
Itamar was a handsome young romantic man. One day he saw Lea
standing on the porch of her house and fell in love with her. Lea was a
16 year old beautiful girl. She had big black eyes and a long black hair.
Lea's family was a very rich and famous Sephardic family in Jerusalem
- the Abu-Shdid family.

Itamar wrote letters to Lea, but Lea's mother hid Itamar's letters, and so
Lea never knows of those letters. Lea's mother did not approve this
love, because Itamar came from a poor Ashkenazi family. Those days
the Sephardic Jews would not marry Ashkenazi Jews.
Itamar loved Lea very much and decided to publish the letters in his
Hebrew newspaper. Every week he would write love letters and poems
for Lea in the newspaper. He wrote that Lea's mother would not let Lea
read his letters. All the people in Jerusalem were talking about Itamar's
love to Lea and waited every week to read Itamar's letters in the
newspaper. Lea's mother was very embarrassed.

One day Itamar wrote in the newspaper that if Lea didn't answer him,
he would commit suicide. People in Jerusalem asked Lea if she loved
Itamar and she said "Yes". Lea's mother did not have a choice and she
was forced to approve Itamar and Lea's marriage. Lea and Itamar got
married and lived happily together for many years.
