The Book of Deuteronomy – חומש דברים 72
Torah portion Ve'Zot HaB'racha
Torah portion Ve'Zot HaB'racha is the last of the portions of the Torah.
The nation of Israel is commanded to learn the Torah day and night, and again to
return and to learn.
The Talmud says (Tractate Chagigah 9b):
A person who learns a chapter of Torah one hundred times is not similar to a
person who learns the chapter one hundred and one times.
That means that a person who learns a chapter in the Torah 101 times reaches a
much better grasp than a person who learns 100 times.
Once they asked Rabbi Ephraim of Luntschitz ("Kli Yakar") – why is it so
important to learn one hundred and one times; why is there so great a difference
between one hundred times and one hundred and one times?
The rabbi answered:
The numerical value* of the word "remember" – 227
The numerical value of the world "forget" – 328
The difference between the two words:
328 – 227 = 101
Here there is a hint: someone who wants to learn the Torah and not to forget
needs to learn every chapter in the Torah 101 times.
