The Train Station
In 1892, the Turks build a train track in Israel. The track connects
between Jerusalem and the coast of Israel.
Two and a half years later, (they) finish building the track. Everyone
arrives at the opening ceremony of the train station: Jews, Arabs,
important people and Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, who gives the train its
(Hebrew) name “Rakevet”. The train travels very slowly – sometimes
in takes the train six hours to get from Jerusalem to Jaffa!
From 1960, people begin to travel by bus and car, and there are not
many travelers on the train. In 1998, Israel Railways decides to close
down the train station.
Today in the station’s area there is a cultural center, as well as caf?s
and shops.
