Item #3 (Advanced Level)
Kosher or Not?
Welcome the rooster that hasn’t stopped stirring up the ultra-orthodox
world for weeks, undergoing a variety of tests, headed by the stick test.
The whole mess starts with the kosher laws regarding poultry. With
poultry, the Torah gives a list of twenty four birds that are forbidden to eat.
Seemingly, all thousands of other species are supposed to be kosher, but it
became fixed in (Jewish) tradition that in Jewish communities (they) only
eat kinds of birds that are a part of tradition, meaning that they have been
okay to eat for generations. This story begins when a group of Yeshiva
students from Bnei Brak want to find a bird that has no concern for a
mixture of non-kosher birds or genetic engineering, and they set off on this
journey, find a bird called the Berekel in Belgium. En route to the ultra-
orthodox’ tables the rooster got to the table of great Rabbis, some of whom
determined – obviously it is non-kosher; and some stated – obviously it is
kosher. The rooster was asked to prove itself and had to face the stick test,
which distinguishes a kosher bird from a bird of prey, which is of course
forbidden to eat.
