                    New Order on the Road

This morning in Tel Aviv the enforcement of electric bicycles and scooters
by municipal inspectors began, to whom enforcing powers were
transferred. Under the new enforcement, in streets where there’s a bicycle
trail riding on all kinds of (non-motorized) vehicles is only allowed on it.
When there’s no bicycle trail, if the speed limit on the road is up to thirty
kilometers an hour, riding is only allowed on the road, on the sidewalk –
only for riders under the age of sixteen and only on regular bicycles. When
the speed limit is over thirty kilometers per hour, electric vehicles are only
allowed to ride on the road, riding on regular bicycles on the sidewalks
will not be enforced. “Cars don’t care about me, riding on the road is a
mortal danger.” The riders’ anger was also translated in recent days into
signs that were hanged across town against the new enforcement. Fines of
between a hundred and one thousand NIS will be given even for violations
like using a cell phone while riding, and walking on a bicycle trail. This
month inspectors will settle for just warnings, to allow pedestrians, riders
and drivers to get used to the new municipal order.
