Item #3 (Advanced Level)
A Hundred Years Later
The Australian cavalry conquered the old train station in Zemach at noon
today, and not for the first time. A hundred years after one of the last
cavalry battles in modern history, descendants of those same fighters came
in order to perpetuate their loved ones and reenact the battles to liberate
Be’er Sheva and later against Germany’s army near the Kineret, and they
couldn’t hide their excitement. While few in Israel and even at the Jordan
Valley have even heard of the First World War battle and the role of
(these) fighters who went twelve thousand kilometers away from their
home, in Australia the battle is still told in schools today. Over this
upcoming week Prime Ministers of Australia and New Zealand will also
land in Israel for ceremonies to commemorate the war that ended the
Ottoman occupation in the land of Israel and the beginning of the British
mandatory regime, which eventually led to the establishment of the state of
Israel.
