From a Stand to a Bar
The Mahne Yehuda market in Jerusalem, a party scene people have
migrated to from all over Israel for quite some time, cafés and restaurants
everywhere. Except that this whole celebration pushed buyers out, the
traders say. Tonight we reveal the business survey held at the market, with
about three hundred stores in it. According to the data, between the years
two thousand twelve and two thousand sixteen, the number of catering and
bar businesses more than doubled, from twenty businesses to forty five.
Dudi Amsalem had a cookie stand for years, until losses increased and led
him to trade the stand for a bar. But it seems that everyone is in agreement
that the phenomenon has already reached an extreme point that might
change the market’s character. Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem Ofer
Berkowitz, who headed the revolution, is now leading a move to stop it
and preserve the market’s character. This plan needs legal confirmation,
but if it won’t be implemented, everyone warns, one of the city’s main
draws will vanish and all the effort to revive the area will go down the
drain.
