Item #3 (Advanced Level)
The Piano Doctor
Michael fixes keys, takes care of each string, touches the sounds. (This)
piano tuner does it all without seeing. He’s sixty seven years old, blind
from the age of one. He takes busses from (his) home in Be’er Sheva to
anywhere in the country in order to heal sick pianos. Yesterday he came to
Jerusalem, for Tamar’s piano. Photographer David Rubinger photographed
the boy feeling a map in nineteen fifty nine, this picture is one of his
favorites, it shows Michael the boy. The boy who grew up, worked as a
phone operator in the municipality of Kiryat Gat, but insisted on music.
Someone told him that there’s one piano tuning school in Washington
where only blind people study. “In life (those) who give up, they’re going
backwards, (you) always have to go forward. A piano is a great world, in
my next life I really do want to be a pianist.”
