Political Source: The Price for Shalit – Impossible
[The] hope for the release of the abducted soldier encountered
an obstacle. A senior source that is involved with the affair:
"Anyone who would see the list of prisoners that Hamas is
demanding will understand that the price tag does not enable
realization of the deal." This is what one of the most senior
political sources dealing with the affair said this week, in closed
talks. "Anyone who would see the list of prisoners that Hamas is
demanding will understand this", he added. "It is very difficult
to agree to such a price – even (on the part of) those who very
much want to promote the deal and even (on the part of) those
who believe that one must pay a heavy price for it." The senior
(source)'s opinion also reflects the opinion of the Israel Security
Agency [General Security Service], which is displaying relative
stiffness and which objects to performing the deal in its present
format. As of now, the political echelon is the one that must
make the decision, but it is hesitating.
During the recent months quite a few [not a few] dramas took
place regarding [in] the contacts with Hamas. As of now, despite
considerable progress that has taken place in [the] recent
months, the final, decisive, decision has not yet been reached by
the political echelon. This, as opposed to the IDF's position,
which Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, who thinks that one must
return Gilad Shalit home as quickly as possible and at any price,
represents adamently.
