SPECIAL INSIGHT: MEXICO
 Mexico: Did You Know?
    COLOR TV
Color TV was the brainchild of a Mexican. Guadalajara-born engineer Guillermo González Camarena was granted a U.S. patent in 1941 when he was just 23 years old for a “chromoscopic adapter for television equipment.” Not only did his idea revo- lutionize home entertainment, but equipment based on his invention was also used during NASA’s 1979 Voyager mission to take pictures and video of Jupiter. His birth- day, February 17, was declared Mexico’s Day of the Inventor, in tribute to his legacy.

FILIBERTO VÁZQUEZ DAVILA
To avoid the possibility of electoral fraud in countries where identification documents for citizens are not always standardized, many voting booths dip voters’ index fingers in permanent ink to prevent double voting. Unfortunately, the inks used were often able to be removed by special substances. In 1994, Filiberto Vázquez Davila, a Mexican biochemical engineer, developed a special tint that lasts for several days until the skin cells renew themselves. With this invention, Vázquez Davila has literally left his mark on global democracy, and his ink is now used in elections worldwide.
