In this issue, "Business Spotlight" focuses on our FNF Canada operation. Brand News sat down with John Rider and Dustin Allan to get a behind-the-scenes look into our sister company to the North.
Although purchased by FNF in 2003, the predecessor company to FNF Canada actually came into existence in 1994. In its more than 20 year history, FNF Canada has developed into a powerhouse in Canadian real estate as well as an innovative provider of mortgage and loan related services to Canadian financial institutions. While FNF Canada is the overarching company in Canada (just like FNF is in the U.S.), its history goes even further back through its licensed title insurer, Chicago Title Insurance Company Canada, which has been operating since the 1960s.
FNF Canada's Business
In Canada, attorneys complete the title work and registrations associated with real estate transactions, and title companies issue the title insurance policy. FNF Canada handles both residential and commercial transactions for their clients. Outside of title insurance, they also handle document processing, property tax management, appraisal management and valuations services, and collections for financial institutions. They also offer an exclusive end-to-end solution suite, which integrates the services required for the life cycle of a mortgage closing from the request for an appraisal through to funding the transaction.
Chicago Title Canada handles around 8,500 orders per month. In 2017, Chicago Title Canada wrote more than 70,000 residential title insurance policies and more than
4,000 commercial policies. It’s not uncommon for some of those commercial deals to have liabilities of more than $1 billion.
In May of this year, they co-insured policies for a PIRET (Pure Industrial Real Estate Trust) transaction, which carried with it total policy liability of close to $3 billion between the owner and loan policies.
FNF Canada's Operations
There are more than 180 employees throughout our Canadian operations ready to serve you. The main hub is located in Toronto. There is also a location in Montreal that handles any transactions that need to be done in French.
How They Can Help You
“We can help develop relationships between Canadian clients and U.S. clients,” said John Rider, Senior Vice President of Retail and Commercial Title Insurance with Chicago Title Insurance Company Canada. “Outside of facilitating deals that our Canadian clients might have on U.S. properties, we can help connect U.S. clients with appropriate Canadian contacts when they have transactions on Canadian properties.” FNF Canada can assist with developing contacts to law firms, brokerages and lenders. Rider continued, “On top of the connections we can help provide, our revenue splits are very similar to what American clients expect in the U.S.”
