The door opened to the idling GEMINI SYNDROME tour bus
parked on the side of the Worcester Palladium. AARON
NORDSTROM, lead vocalist, greeted ION Indie Magazine as
we stepped on board. BRIAN STEELE (MEDINA), drummer,
was sitting on the bench seat boosting the posts for the
Delaware leg of their tour.
ION learned Aaron began singing and playing the piano at
the age of three. By the time he was four or five years old, he
was singing in the church choir. Nordstrom’s mom, also a
singer, took him to her vocal coach. Additionally, he began
taking lessons in classical and jazz piano. As Nordstrom got
older he picked up the guitar and began learning to play.
As far as forming Gemini Syndrome, Aaron, Brian, and AP
ALESSANDRO PAVERI) explained that they met in an
instant. There was a “magic chemistry” and everything just
fell into place. Brian was living in Los Angeles at the time;
his roommate had gone to school with Aaron years earlier.
Brian sent Aaron a message via Myspace and they agreed
to meet in person. The two hit it off -- talking for a few hours.
After their initial meeting, Aaron went back home to his
folks in Chicago. Brian and Aaron texted each other lyrical
ideas and concepts over the next six weeks, writing their
first album. Aaron hopped back on a plane flying to
Burbank, CA. “I picked him up from the airport, we got
sushi, and then went back to the house to sing through the
songs…I still have the video of that,” Brian recalled with a
laugh.
The band hit the studio three days later -- with their
guitarist at the time and AP on bass. Brian asked AP to
join the band as the bassist, remembering the way he
had seen AP play previously, “He’s this insane ninja bass
player.” AP showed up to the studio and the producer
asked if he was the bass player. “I guess so!” AP said,
smiling while he recalled, “I just free-styled the
bass…we all liked the bass line so much after that, we
didn’t want to change it.”
Aaron, Brian, and AP all moved in together after knowing
one another for about three months. They admit it’s kind
of weird when you think about it, but it just worked. “If
you were to see it in a movie, you’d be like ‘no way’,”
Brian said, “but that’s the way the stars aligned.” Aaron
agreed.
Recently, the band welcomed a new guitarist, MEEGS
(RASCON), formerly with the band Coal Chamber. Brian
had met Meegs years ago when Coal Chamber was
looking for a drummer. Around the same time, Brian
started going through a challenging time in his personal
life. He credits Meegs with helping to pull him out of it.
