So, it did not come as a surprise when Brad told
me he was going to record it for his album. But I
was stunned when I heard the final mix. You see,
not only did Brad deliver his own heart-wrenching
vocal, he also had a surprise guest to sing the
remainder of the song. That person was none
other than Scott Joss, a longtime member of
Haggard’s band The Strangers. The result was
astounding! In fact, Scott also lent his fiddle and
mandolin skills to this track and several others on
the album.
Scott Joss was not the only “stranger” to
contribute to this album. Doug Colosio, who
played keyboard for Haggard may years, is
featured on three songs. I know how much it
meant to Brad to have these two superb
musicians contributing to his album -- and it
certainly impressed me!
I must also tip my hat to producer Tom Probasco
for his work on Brad’s CD, as he made it sound
fantastic – along with the many other great
musicians who contributed their fine talents.
Knowing Brad as I do, he would tell you that he
does not consider himself a great vocalist…but I
do. He has a powerful yet mellow voice and has
such a unique way of capturing a phrase and
putting in the exact emotion he wishes to convey.
That, coupled with the superbly talented
musicians on this album, have made “Second
Chances” one of my top favorite albums in any
genre by any artist. I do not say that lightly.
As I listen to these songs, I continue to find more
things with which I can relate. I have listened to
this album and it has caused me to reflect on my
own life’s journey. I truly believe it will do the same
for you.
