I just pounded the pavement for my fourth consecutive year covering Milwaukee’s Summerfest
-- the world’s largest music festival -- featuring eleven days of music along with boatloads of
food and drink venders. The whole event is nestled up to the shoreline of Lake Michigan which
continuously lulls the festivalgoers with a gentle summer breeze.
It’s truly is an honor to cover this event, but my coverage spotlights just a small glimpse into
what Summerfest offers to music-lovers. Featuring eleven stages and over 800 bands
representing a gamut of genres from rock, country, blues, and jazz, and boasting an attendance
of 800,000 to 900,000 over the course of the event, there’s something for every musical taste.
This year’s coverage brought me back to a time in my youth when I would hear music coming
out of my sisters’ bedrooms, where they were spinning records by bands such as Foreigner,
Foghat, and Styx. They were rocking way before I had the inclination or revelation, as I was
still into the music my parents raised me on -- country…and I’m talking back in the seventies.
So, with that personal trip down my “musical memory lane” -- I share with you these images
from Summerfest 2019.
I had the pleasure of shooting some old-school rockers that are still out hitting the road while
adding some new faces along the way. As the test of time sometimes takes its toll on band
lineups, the likelihood is that original band members have dwindled down to the minority in
some cases. But life takes and life gives, and these bands are still here for new generations to
enjoy. And from where I sit…that kicks ass!
Enjoy the fest through my lens…and I hope to see you all next year wandering around the park.
Remember, Summerfest is a must do for everyone who enjoys memorable music, fabulous
food, and a frosty cold beer. Here’s a toast to 2020!
