The legends of Motown, The Commodores, opened up the show with “Shake It Lady” and ended
with Grammy-winning song, “Brick House.” And with groovy, romantic tunes like "Easy" and "Three
Times A Lady" in between and punctuated with their lights, smoke, and palpable energy, the
performance took on the essence of a rock concert.
Tonight, only three original members remain -- founding guitarist, vocalist, and trumpeter William
King, Walter Orange on drums and vocals, and vocalist J.D. Nicholas, who replaced Lionel Richie
when he left The Commodores in 1972. Casual fans of The Commodores might best remember the
band, which began in 1968 at Tuskegee University in Alabama, for its association with Lionel
Richie, who sang lead on many of the group's hits in the late 1970s. Together, they have kept the
legacy and the spirit of The Commodores alive. Today, The Commodores are continue to write,
record, and perform.
